A giant observatory tower is being constructed in the heart of the Amazon basin, which will be known as the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory. It is expected to rise 325m from the ground to study climate change.
Brazilian and German scientists are hopeful that the tower will help understand the sources of greenhouse gases as instruments will gather data on greenhouse gases and aerosol particles.
The tower is being constructed out of steel brought from 170 Km outside of Amazon city of Manaus by road and river. Owing to the height of the tower it will be possible to investigate the change in air masses over a span of several hundred kilometers of the forest area in the basin.
The tower will help in understanding the reasons behind global change and global warming. Placed in the Amazon basin which is the world’s most sensitive ecosystem, the powerful intake and release of carbon in the atmosphere will be determined.
