35 dead in stampede in Shanghai on New Year’s EveThe New Year festivities came to a tragic halt in Shanghai where 35 people died in a stampede and a dozen were injured. Shanghai is the most populous city in China and thousands had gathered to celebrate the advent of New Year.

 

The stampede happened just half an hour before New Year along the riverfront. 42 people have been injured according to local news agencies.

 

Witnesses said that people started scrambling when coupons resembling dollar bills were thrown from the third floor of the building.

 

Those among the dead were young students who had assembled to watch the fun and frolic.

 

 

The local officials had decided to close off a popular New Year’s light show citing police concern according to local media sources. Last Year the event drew 300,000 people and the police had a tough time dispersing the crowd.

 

New Year celebrations were called off in front of the tallest skyscraper of Beijing. Revellers however gathered there and observed their own countdown .
