The Allegheny County Airport Authority (ACAA) has announced that it has undertaken a Master Plan Update for Pittsburgh International Airport which will guide airport development for the next 20 years.
The Master Plan Update is required by the Federal Aviation Administration as products of the study are needed in order to apply for federal grant funding as well as to insure that certain standards of safety are met.
“Our goal is to create a Master Plan Update that provides us with the flexibility to respond freely as new opportunities arise, while maintaining the regulatory and development standards that have been established for aviation and our community,” said David Minnotte, Chairman, ACAA.
“Our ultimate objective is to create a plan for the airport that will meet the needs of our customers, airlines and stakeholders today and in the future.”
“The Master Plan Update is funded by airport revenues. No “general fund” taxpayer money is used to pay for the Master Plan Study,” said James Gill, Acting Executive Director, ACAA. Airport funds include rent, fees, and purchases at the airport.
The update will focus on airport functions as well as ways to use public space and incorporate new and future technologies to enhance the customer experience.
Safety, security, financial feasibility, operational efficiency and environmental prudence are also important factors.
The Master Plan Update is expected to be completed by the end of 2015. Initially, planners will gather information about existing facilities and prepare a forecast of passenger and aircraft activity.
Later efforts include assessing existing facility capabilities and future facility needs for the airfield, terminal, parking facilities, road access, cargo, business aviation and support functions.
Additional focus areas include aircraft noise, environmental considerations, phasing and financial planning.
