RedTeeBreaks-07jun16It is really great to see so many ladies getting into golf, with more golf clubs recognising the need to encourage females of all ages into golf.

However Newcastle City Council is in a league of their own, through Active Newcastle who promote a healthy lifestyle through sport; whether that be walking or in this case golf, Active Newcastle is the central coordinating hub for physical activity and community sport across Newcastle.

In the last three years, following some very specific research and project work it has seen growth of women’s participation by over 22% and to try and using the secret of its success; ‘activity designed by women for women’ decided to run a pilot project for women’s golf.

Centred on the workforce in the city, the programme started with a social evening at a well-known city centre restaurant with prosecco and cake as the essential ingredient, to find out from the women invited what would make an attractive and supportive programme.

The outcome from that evening was that 30 women signed up followed by weekly coaching in very small groups, access to a weekly four hole competition and range of social outings.

The Active Newcastle team have used funding secured locally and through Sport England This Girl Can campaign but have recognised the need for specialist support in providing the right offer so have developed a partnership with a local golf club to help with coaching and use of their facilities and with lady golfer specialists Red Tee Breaks.

Equally important however is the need for excellent social organisation, so each session ensures tea and cake for everyone and for the first golf day worked with Red Tee Breaks to provide the most wonderful event at Macdonald Linden Hall Golf and Country Club.

It was our pleasure at Red Tee Breaks to organise the first ladies golf event for Active Newcastle, we aimed to bring together new to golf ladies i.e. ladies who had never played before and those who had been for a few lessons and those who have had a few lessons and already played a few holes on the golf course.

In conjunction with Active Newcastle we were able to highlight the fun side of golf as well as the health benefits to an eager audience; show the positives of the sport and let the ladies have a fun day with their friends. We simply gave them the platform for them to spring forward and to look at golf as an achievable yet social sport.

All of the ladies left with a buzz and are extremely keen to learn more and get involved in golf.

Plans for the future are very exciting and we are delighted to be involved from the outset in such a revolutionary marketing campaign for ladies golf.
