unveils the best of Myanmar for the festivities of Kason

Published on : Wednesday, April 22, 2015, one of Asia’s leading hotel booking sites and part of Nasdaq-listed Priceline Group, has assembled a collection of hotel specials in some of Myanmar’s most popular destinations to celebrate Kason, one of the country’s holiest and most important ceremonies. This year the festival falls on 2 May, 2015.

Myanmar, also known as Burma, is a deeply Buddhist country. Its most important festivals and celebrations revolved around the Buddhist calendar and notable events in the life of the Buddha. The Kason Festival is one of these, as it celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Buddha, which all took place on the same day in the Myanmar calendar more than 2,500 years ago.

Since the commemoration takes place in May – the hottest time of year in Myanmar – it’s a welcome relief to learn that there’s an extensive water element to the proceedings. At almost every large temple in the country – and there are thousands – celebrants join in elaborate parades and dance to festive music, many carrying clay pots. The pots are filled with water, and the ultimate destination for all is a local temple which houses a Bodhi tree, the same type that Buddha attained enlightenment while sitting under. To honor his legacy, the water is poured over the tree’s roots, ensuring its continued health in the dry season. Of course, there is music and delicious food to add to the festivities.

For this special occasion, Agoda has collected a variety of hotels to enable visitors to take part in the festival in some of Myanmar’s most beautiful and popular destinations. These include the crumbling beauty of Yangon, the serene natural landscapes around Inle Lake, the vistas of Bagan, and more.

The Kason Festival is a perfect opportunity for visitors to take part in a fascinating cultural celebration, as well as meet locals in the most festive of settings.
