Airbnb, a San Francisco-based short term rental service, has been sued on Tuesday, by Gregory Seldon, a 25-year-old African American from Washington, D.C. Gregory alleged that the start-up chose to ignore his complaint when his booking was denied because of his colour.
Seldon was denied by the company of a service in March 2015. But, when he created two fake profiles with photos of white men, his booking was accepted by the host. When he questioned the company, he received a comment instead of an apology. “It’s a disappointment people like you always victimize yourselves solely on the basis of skin color,” they commented.
As per the lawsuit, Airbnb denied Seldon “full and equal enjoyment” of lodging and services due to his skin-colour. This lawsuit is not the only time when Airbnb got associated with discrimination.
After the lawsuit was filed, Airbnb stated that they are trying to address the issues.
Airbnb spokesman Nick Papas said, “While we do not comment on pending litigation, we strongly believe that racial discrimination is unacceptable and it flies in the face of our mission to bring people together.”
