AustralianWomensSevensfarewell780pxSydney Airport and Australian Rugby Union (ARU) this morning farewelled the Qantas Australian Women’s Sevens team as the players departed Sydney for Rio de Janeiro to represent rugby and their country at the biggest sporting event on earth.

Sydney Airport is a proud supporter of the team, which recently made history as Australia’s first Sevens World Series champions, highlighting the team’s most successful year to date.

“As the first corporate partner to support only the Australian women’s side, we’re delighted to farewell the stars of women’s rugby and wish them all the best as they depart for their biggest competition yet,” Sydney Airport Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Kerrie Mather said.

“The players are excellent ambassadors for Australia and we feel very proud of what they’ve achieved so far.

“We’ll be following their progress closely in August. They’re a fantastic team and we hope they continue their success on the world stage.”

The team welcomed Sydney Airport’s support.

“This is an exciting time for Rugby Sevens and we’re all very excited at what lays ahead for all of us over the next few weeks,” Australian Sevens co-captain Shannon Parry said.

“It’s somewhat of a step into the unknown, but we have prepared well as a squad and we cannot wait to take to the field for our first game against Colombia,” Ms Parry said.

“Our objective is to go there confident and prepared to perform,” Australian Sevens Head Coach Tim Walsh said.

“For the majority of us, it will be a once in a lifetime opportunity. We intend to perform and enjoy the game we love to play,” Mr Walsh said.

The farewell event was hosted at the Qantas check-in counter at Sydney Airport’s T1 International terminal before the team departed on QF27.
