Australia’s Garig Gunak wins clean beach award

Garig-Gunak-Barlu-National-ParkGarig Gunak Barlu National Park on the Cobourg Peninsula is a Keep Australia Beautiful Australian Clean Beaches Award winner. NT Parks and Wildlife Minister Bess Price and Environment Minister Gary Higgins welcomed the win announced at the national awards in Darwin this evening. Garig Gunak Barlu National Park is jointly managed by Parks and Wildlife rangers and the Arrarrkbi people.

 

It won the Heritage and Culture section of the awards. “This is wonderful kudos for the park and is a testament to the hard work by the rangers and the Arrarrkbi people,” Minister Price said. “I was delighted to be at the national awards this year and thrilled with our park’s win. “This is a prestigious award and well deserved.” Minister Higgins said the KAB Clean Beaches Awards recognised communities and organisations which actively work for a cleaner and more sustainable coastal environment. “The fact that the Territory competes successfully on this national level is a proud achievement,” he said. “The beautiful and diverse Garig Gunak Barlu National Park is a jewel and home to a rich diverse range of species – floral, fauna, marine. “Congratulations to all involved and thank you to Keep Australia Beautiful for the acknowledgement.” The overall Australian Clean Beaches award went to Guilderton in Western Australia with Burleigh Beach in Queensland coming second. The national judges said one of the most notable aspects of management of heritage and culture in Garig Gunak Barlu National Park was the role of the Traditional Owner groups in its management.
