Destination-NSWAfter a successful collaboration on the International Emmy nominated and Cannes Gold Lion winning series The Great Crusade, Nathan Earl and Glen Condie are backtogether with a new project, PLONK. As the name suggests this time it’s about wine… well, at least the goings on of a dysfunctional take on a TV wine show. PLONK comes via Executive Producer Condie’s Wonder Communications.

PLONK is an online comedy series that will debut in February 2014, set among NSW’s beautiful and diverse wine and tourism destinations, supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.

The plot is simple – we follow the trials and tribulations of a feckless television crew as they travel through NSW trying to produce a unique, engaging and credible wine program. It’s a look behind the curtain of a TV production and the elements that can derail even the most benign of intentions.

At its heart though, PLONK is a love letter to the Australian wine industry, expressed the best way they know how, through comedy.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events, George Souris said while the program gently mocks wine television shows, its heroes are taking an unforgettable trip through NSW and some of the country’s most beautiful scenery.

“This new series will provide a unique platform to promote wine touring and experiences throughout NSW wine regions in a light-hearted way. Each episode will capture a different NSW wine destination, highlighting the quality and diversity of experiences available in the NSW wine regions – despite the presenters’ best attempts to critique the wine.”

Creator Nathan Earl said, “Growing up in the Hunter I’ve always wanted to make a show about wine but it took a while to really nail a point of difference. Wine shows in general are ripe for parody. With PLONK we get to celebrate the industry and poke fun at the way it’s portrayed at the same time. ”

Playing comedic caricatures of themselves, the ensemble cast includes Chris Taylor (The Chaser) as the shows celebrity front man, Nathan Earl as the producer struggling to juggle investors’ dollars and talent expectations, and Josh Tyler, “The Expert”. Unpreparedness, creative differences and downright incompetence are at the heart of the action as our team scours the countryside in search of fine wine, eccentric people and exciting stories. Their hearts are in the right place, if only their camera was as well.

Glen Condie also shared his thoughts on how the show came about, “We associate wine with great times as do most people we know. The trouble is that a lot of wine shows are serious and stuffy, not at all fun. Nath had a great comedic twist on a wine show and people seemed to like the last thing we did together so we thought it must be time for PLONK!”

The wine community has also thrown its support behind PLONK with cameos from some well-known and reputable wine industry identities. “I had so much fun shooting with the guys here in the Hunter. Nathan and the crew have taken the over seriousness out of our industry and shown it for what it really is: good times, enjoyment and lots of smiles.” Bruce Tyrrell, Managing Director, Tyrrells Wines.

The series will be directed by Nathan Earl, who will also co-write, alongside Chris Taylor and Joshua Tyler. Glen Condie is Executive Producer and Creative Director.
