Famous historian and Antiques Roadshow Expert, Paul Atterbury, joined East Midlands Trains today (Friday 18 July) to mark the 175th anniversary of Derby’s railways with a special train naming.
The naming of East Midlands Trains’ Meridian 222015 as ‘Derby 175’ is part of a series of events taking place throughout the city this year to mark Derby’s proud rail heritage and the future role of the railway.
Other events include a special Red Dot Day at Derby station on Saturday 2 August with tickets priced at £17.50 return for adults, £5 for children, to travel anywhere on the East Midlands Trains’ network.
On Saturday 13 September, there will also be a chance for people to have a look behind the scenes of Derby’s Etches Park depot, which is used by East Midlands Trains to maintain thousands of trains each year. The depot will be opening its doors to the public for the first time ever with a range of exhibits and demonstrations offering fun for visitors of all ages. Tickets for the Etches Depot Community Open Day will be sold via the Ticket Factory.
Paul Atterbury, one of the programme’s leading antiques experts, has a huge variety of interests and expertise has written a number of books on the history of the railway. He said the experience of naming a train was priceless and also commented: “Since the 1840s, thousands of locomotives and trains have been built at Derby, one of the most important sites in railway history. Many of those carried names, and knowing that I am going to add to that list at a naming ceremony is truly exciting.”

This is a very special year for the city and the naming of one of our Meridian trains as Derby 175 will ensure that people across the country will have a constant reminder of this year’s celebrations.”
The BBC Antiques Roadshow will be visiting Derby’s iconic Roundhouse on Sunday 20 July between 9.30am and 4.30pm. Entry is free to members of the public.
