The announcement was jointly made at the World Travel Market Latin America by TIES and ESTC14 partners including

EMBRATUR (Brazilian Tourist Board), Mato Grosso do Sul State Government, and Bonito Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Bonito considers itself and proudly promotes itself as the “capital of ecotourism” in Brazil. While this may seem an ambitious claim to make in a country known for its diverse natural and cultural attractions and for its mega-biodiversity, Bonito has good reason to be proud: for 12 years in a row, Bonito has won the “Best Ecotourism Destination” Category in the Tourism Awards by Brazil’s leading tourism magazine Viagem e Turismo.

“As the world’s eyes turn to Brazil for the major international events – the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016 – the global tourism industry is encouraged to join what will be the ‘World Cup of Ecotourism’ in Bonito in 2014,” says Ariane Janér, advisory board member of TIES and one of Brazil’s ecotourism pioneers.

Bonito MS, with its successful Single Voucher System (Sistema de Voucher Único) that enables the destination to strictly control tourism’s impact and to support quality guest experiences, is a great model of ecotourism in action and sustainable destination management.

Bonito is committed to ecotourism, both as a mechanism to support preservation of natural areas and as an economic driver, and ecotourism, therefore, has been effectively incorporated into the city’s and region’s long-term vision and strategy.

The ESTC is a one-of-a-kind annual industry conference focused on innovative ideas and practical solutions that support the sustainability goals for the tourism industry.

Bringing together industry stakeholders from over 40 countries, the ESTC supports positive changes for tourism by facilitating opportunities for collaboration.

This year’s ESTC is being held in Nairobi, Kenya (September 24-27, 2013), co-hosted by the Kenya Tourism Board and African Wildlife Foundation.
