visa-cardAbu Dhabi: As a result of a policy change Emirate tourists and businessmen will be able to visit the UK and stay there for six months without a pre-entry visa from early next year, according to British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Visitors will need to fill up an electronic visa waiver (EVW) application free of charge at the UK Border Agency website www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk at least 48 hours before they are due to travel.

The move will do away with the need to provide biometric information, attend an appointment at a visa application centre or hand in passports prior to travel. The EVW will be available for visits of up to six months.

However, those coming to the UK to work or study will still need to apply for visas the regular way.

The UAE has welcomed the decision by the British government that exempts Emirati businessmen and tourists from pre-entry visa as of early next year.

The UAE Foreign Ministry is working with the UK embassy to learn more about the mechanism and details of the exemption, and will later announce further details and procedures.
