In view of the inclement weather prevailing on major parts of neighbouring US and the far easy including countries like India, Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Niagara and some other areas of the province, warning of massive winter storm that’s impacting Niagara this evening and into Wednesday. A low pressure system with moisture from the Gulf of Mexico is expected to intensify into a winter storm as it moves up along the Eastern Seaboard of the United States tonight and into New England on Wednesday.
The above regions are expected to be on the western fringe of the snow shield from this storm.
Wet snow associated with this system is expected to spread over the regions near Lake Erie and Lake Ontario during the afternoon and evening rush hours and over regions farther to the north later this evening.
Along the shoreline of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie the precipitation will likely begin as rain or a rain-wet snow mix.
However as northerly winds start to pump in colder air from the north overnight, the
precipitation will change over to all snow by early Wednesday morning.
Total snowfall accumulations will range from a trace to just a couple centimetres over the
western sections and immediately along the shoreline of Lake Ontario in the Toronto to
Hamilton areas, to 5 cm over the Niagara Escarpment.
Snowfall amounts are expected to be progressively more as you go east, a swath of areas
extending from the Durham region northeast across Peterborough to Eastern Algonquin Park could see 5 to 10 cm and about 10 cm from Renfrew to Trenton.
East of these regions a significantly heavier snowfall is expected and snowfall warnings are in effect for tonight and Wednesday for 15 to 25 cm of snow.
Motorists should be prepared for poor winter driving conditions tonight and Wednesday and allow for extra time to reach their destination.
Travel into Eastern Ontario and neighbouring New York State will be difficult due to heavier snow expected with warnings in effect.
Travellers are advised to use extreme caution if travel is unavoidable, and since this winter storm will impact much of the Northeastern United States, Eastern Ontario and Quebec, travellers should check with airlines for flight delays and cancellations. Environment Canada is closely monitoring the Progress of this winter storm.
