It is expected that by the end of this year the volume of international air cargo being managed in Incheon Airport will easily reach the level of the previous year, 2million 457 thousand ton, thanks to the changes toward the increasing tendency in Incheon Airport air cargo.
On December 10th, Incheon International Airport Corporation has recorded 2 million 321 thousand ton of international air cargo being transported in Incheon Airport which is more than 2 million 319 thousand ton, the number registered last year during the same period of time. Such a recovery of actual performance is interpreted as the establishment of a reverse opportunity for decreasing tendency in international air cargo transported by Incheon Airport during past two years.
In 2010, International air cargo transported in Incheon Airport has hit the number of 2 million 684 thousand ton, the highest number since the opening of the airport. After that, the numbers dropped by 5.4% in 2011 and 3.2% in 2012 correspondently, showing decreasing tendency for two years in a row. Such decrease was due to air cargo’s weight lightening related to the small sizes of IT products, the acceleration of overseas outsourcing in domestic producing facilities, the transportation of cargo by sea, the decrease in frequency of operation of domestic airlines’ cargo aircrafts and other structural changes of air transport market.
In this kind of situation, the monthly actual performance during October and November increased 3.3% and 3.8% correspondently comparing to the same period last year, making up for the shortage due to the decrease and by doing so recovering the level of cumulative air cargo during the previous year. Especially, thanks to the expansion of export from USA, Europe and China- the major countries-cargo transporters of Incheon Airport- which are facing the economic recovery, the outbound export cargo from Incheon Airport has greatly increased comparing to the same period last year. Also, the consumers’ goods-centered inbound cargo has greatly increased due to the strengthening won, playing so far the role of locomotive in increase of cumulative air cargo.
