The Northern Territory is being showcased to representatives from major Chinese companies this week as part of the Government’s plan to attract more high spending Chinese visitors and develop our reputation as a unique business events destination.
Chief Minister Adam Giles said corporate event buyers representing Chinese companies in the medical, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, finance and IT sectors were spending three days in the Top End this week as part of a Tourism Australia and Tourism NT hosted educational visit.
“China is an important emerging market for the Territory and we are keen to increase our share of this market by doubling our current number of Chinese visitors from 15,000 to 30,000 by 2020,” he said.
“This week’s visit will showcase Top End operators and experiences with the aim of inspiring Chinese businesses to host their next major business event or conference in the Territory.
“The visit will include a tour of the state-of-the-art facilities available at the Darwin Convention Centre and will allow the NT Convention Bureau to strengthen relationships with companies from China who are already looking to host events in Australia in coming years.”
The delegates will experience the Top End’s world class accommodation at Wildman Wilderness Lodge and NT Convention Bureau, view our spectacular scenic helicopter flights and enjoy a typical Outback lunch at Litchfield Pub.
They’ll also get up close to the Top End’s famous crocodiles at Crocosaurus Cove, attend the Mindil Beach Markets and enjoy a Darwin Harbour cruise.
Mr Giles said Tourism Australia predicts future spending by Chinese visitors to Australia could rise to $13 billion by 2020 with China Australia’s fasting growing market in terms of business event spend, growing by almost 30 per cent from 2012 to 2013.
“Chinese travellers are recognised as big spenders and increasing the number of visitors coming here provides a lucrative opportunity for local tourism operators and businesses,” he said.
“It’s all part of the Territory Government’s plan to drive the development of North Australia and build a $2.2 billion visitor economy by 2020.”
