Clogged toilets in Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner raises question on infrastructure maintenance

Published on : Monday, June 2, 2014

air-indiaAir India flight AI 121 to Frankfurt had to make its return to IGI airport from where it took off on Saturday afternoon when all four toilets on the flight were reported to be clogged.

With two full meals, an evening snack and unlimited supply of beverages awaiting the 214 passengers on board,

completing the over eight-hour-long journey without a toilet was not an option for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. According to an Air India official, the flushes were unserviceable for which the plane had to return to Delhi. The two toilets in the front for business class passengers as well as the two in the rear were out of order.

The official also admitted that identical issue was faced some months back when the ultra long Boeing 777 New York-Delhi flight took off.

As this incident raised question on AI’s maintenance, the airline officers recoiled with “horror” tales of the Indian passengers who flush down almost everything that are made available to them for free, including blankets, socks, slippers, towels etc.

Some AI sources demanded for a better maintenance job as it is the oldest airline of the country. The authority is supposed to be aware of the behavioral patterns of the Indian passengers and should maintain the toilets accordingly. The authorities are well aware of the indigenous habits of its passengers and similar attention may perhaps spare AI from such troubles in the future.
