Club CarlsonSM, the global hotel rewards program from Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group is celebrating the one year anniversary of Meetings Minus Carbon. Club Carlson was the first hotel loyalty program to implement a global carbon offsetting initiative,
offsetting the estimated carbon footprint for all Club Carlson for Planners events worldwide. In the last 12 months, working with Carbon Footprint Ltd, the program has purchased carbon credits to offset nearly 12,000 tons of CO2 across the hotel group’s five brands, encompassing more than 1,000 hotels worldwide.
Each ton of CO2 is offset through the following projects:
The 5 Megawatt Wind Mill project: a Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) project focused on renewable green power generation from installation of four wind mills of 1.25 Megawatts each in the Tirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu, India.
One tree is planted for every ton of CO2 offset in the Great Rift Valley in Kenya by the Escarpment Environment Conservation Network (ESCONET). This is in addition to official VCS-based carbon offsetting. ESCONET aims to effectively mobilize and build the Great Rift Valley community’s capacity to rehabilitate, conserve and protect the natural ecosystem.
“The Kikuyu escarpment forest formed a beautiful gateway to the Great Rift Valley until degradation set in. The environment is a major source of water and livelihood for our communities. The Club Carlson contribution helps us to plant 30,000 indigenous trees on 30 hectares of the most degraded areas in the Valley this year,” said, Mburu Waiganjo, ESCONET project coordinator. “The Club Carlson contribution now keeps thirty members from the neighboring forest community gainfully occupied. This provides for their family needs including upkeep and school fees. In addition, their households can now afford energy saving stoves that they are using. The families living standards have been raised considerably”
