Cuba rakes in over 1 bln USD from international tourism in H1 2014

cuba-tourismCuba earned 1.077 billion US dollars from the foreign visitors in the first half of 2014, according to the National Statistics and Information Bureau.

 

The revenue from international tourism rose to 4% over the same period of 2013.

 

This accounts to almost 60% of the tourism revenue forecasted for the entire year according to the report.

A total of 1,660,055 international visitors arrived in Cuba over the six-month period, 3.9 percent more than that in the same period of 2013, the data showed.

The retail sales earned the maximum in the tourism services sector followed by transportation, food and beverage and accommodation in between the month of January and June.

Visitors spent the most on food and beverage, which registered 422 million dollars, or 39 percent of total revenue, followed by 367 million dollars, or 34 percent, for accommodations, which traditionally represents the largest chunk of earnings.

The tourism industry in Cuba aimed to attract 3 million visitors every year and the ruler Raul Castro is investing heavily in the sector.

According to foreign revenue figures, the tourism industry in Cuba is the second largest revenue earner, accounting to 2.6 billion dollars every year.
