The State Government will provide $200,000 to help expand the festival into Launceston, following last year’s highly successful inaugural event in Hobart.
The Premier, Lara Giddings, said Launceston would be treated to a Winter Feast at the Inveresk Precinct, along with a 10 day feature exhibit, to be announced in the New Year.
“Dark MOFO awoke Hobart from its winter slumber this year and we are pleased to be working with the Museum of Old and New Art to bring the magic of this event to Launceston,” Ms Giddings said.
“Dark MOFO is a major tourism drawcard and we expect there will be significant visitor interest in this Northern expansion, generating important economic stimulus during the traditionally quieter winter months.”
Ms Giddings said the Winter Feast would coincide with the AFL game between Hawthorn and the Gold Coast at Aurora Stadium.
“This collision of cultures will transform the Inveresk precinct into an exciting hub of activity with something for sports fans, arts lovers and foodies alike.
“Footy fans will be encouraged to extend their stay to make the most of the diverse array of activities on offer.”
The Minister for Tourism, Scott Bacon, said Dark MOFO joined the ever-expanding calendar of events supported by Events Tasmania.
“The State Government is proud to support around 100 events every year which help to enrich our community and provide important jobs and investment in our economy,” Mr Bacon said.
“In the last 12 months events supported by the Government brought approximately 100,000 visitors to the state, staying on average 5 nights and spending $200 per day.
“Dark MOFO is a significant addition to the Northern calendar, which already includes AFL games, Targa Tasmania, the Junction Arts Festival and the Tasmanian Open Dancesport Championships.
“In addition to financial support, Tourism Tasmania will also be involved in helping to market the entire package of winter events to our key tourist markets.”
Launceston Dark MOFO will be held from the 20th to 29th of June.
