ICAO_decisionGovernment of India has advised all Indian citizens to replace their handwritten passports with machine readable passports by November 24th as no country will accept it after the stipulated period.

The Indian Government is advising all Indian citizens living in India and abroad to redo their passports in accordance to the guidelines by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Since 2001, the Indian Government is issuing machine readable passports, however, the passports issued before 2001 were handwritten. Some of the passports issued during the mid 90s with a validity of 20 years will fall in this category.

Over 2.5 lakhs handwritten passports are still in circulation among the 6.2 crore Indians who hold valid passports.

According to the notice, “Indian citizens residing in India and Abroad and holding such passports with validity beyond the 24th November 2015 should apply for re-issue of their passports well before the deadline in order to avoid any inconvenience in obtaining valid visa or international travel”.
