trad_stage_3-650-300x152In a city bursting at the seams with top class musicians, bands and performers, the organisers of Music City, the festival where everyone can play!, are giving everyone the chance to perform on an open stage on Saturday 21st June.

Two of the highlights of the 24-hour music festival, Roaring Meg Busking Competition and The Big Jam/An Seisiún Mór on Guildhall Square will provide musicians with a chance to showcase their music in the open air to huge audiences.

Not only do the musicians have the chance to perform, but they also have the chance to win a multitude of prizes in the Roaring Meg Busking Competition, which will take place between 12.30pm and 4.30pm across the Walled City. Entries are encouraged from musicians of all abilities, with prizes including £1,000 for Best Act, £200 for Best U18, £200 for Best Senior, £200 for Best Group, £200 for Best Male and £200 for Best Female. All winners will be announced in Guildhall Square at 5.30pm, after The Big Jam.

Seamus Ward, chairperson of Gasyard Wall Feile, and co-organiser of The Roaring Meg Busking competition is delighted that the competition will run this year again, for the 3rd year in a row. He comments: ’Feile are delighted to be involved in Music City this year and more importantly delighted to be offering the music talent in the city an opportunity to use the streets of our town centre as their stage. Last years event was special and we expect this year to be as good if not better. I would encourage anyone with a talent to give us a call and register for the busking competition. We have loads of prize categories and a top prize of £1000.’

The Big Jam or An Seisúin Mór is set to be one of the highlights of Music City 2014 and will take place in Guildhall Square between 3pm and 5.30pm. Again, this is open to musicians of all ages and abilities, from all genres of music and will take place at two parts of Guildhall Square with one half concentrating on purely traditional music and the other half on everything else. No pre-registration is necessary; all you have to do is turn up with your instrument on the day.

Odhrán Mullan, from Cultúrlann úi Chanáin, who has programmed the traditional music stage at Guildhall Square and will coordinate An Seisiún Mór explains:
‘An Seisiún Mór will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the 24 hour music festival. Similar to last year, we are inviting musicians from the four corners of the island to join us in a huge outdoor music session. Anyone who can play a tune should come along and join in.’
