DFW-international-airportDallas/Fort Worth International Airport honored the leading disadvantaged, small, minority and women-owned businesses (D/S/M/WBE) in the contracting and concessions market for their commitment to diversity at its second annual “Champions in Diversity” Awards.

According to a recent economic impact study, business diverse firms at DFW set new records for diversity spend and revenues in 2013. As a major economic engine of the Dallas-Fort Worth region, DFW Airport operations account for $31.6 billion in annual economic impact. Of that total, D/S/M/WBE programs topped $785 million in total economic impact, with more than 7,000 jobs supported.

“Business diverse programs at DFW continue to have an impressive effect on the regional economy. Diversity is embedded in our culture with our workforce, with our vendors, with our Board of Directors and to those we serve,” said Sean Donohue, CEO of DFW International Airport. “We owe a lot of our success to our community partners who support our efforts to find qualified, disadvantaged, small, minority and women owned companies to provide services and products to the Airport.”

Additionally, D/S/M/WBE spending for the DFW Airport Terminal Renewal and Improvement Program (TRIP) created more than $643 million in economic activity for the region in 2013.

The awards ceremony highlighted eight community partners that have paved the way for diversity and inclusion, and supported the development of D/S/M/WBE businesses since the Airport’s conception. To celebrate their 40 years of contributions throughout DFW’s 40-year history, these companies were honored with the “Trailblazer” award.

“As Trailblazers, these companies have demonstrated great tenacity and perseverance in growing their business and championing diversity and inclusion as a part of their day-to-day business operations,” said Linda Valdez Thompson, Executive Vice President of Administration & Diversity. “They are innovative business leaders in their own industry areas and have set the example for others to follow.”

The awards ceremony was held Friday, May 23 at the DFW Airport Hyatt Regency. Businesses in construction, commercial development, procurement and materials management and concessions were recognized for their achievements.
