“I’m thrilled to announce today that the Territory Eels will be back in Darwin playing for premiership points against Penrith in Round 22 in 2015. It will be a true clash of Sydney’s western suburbs played out on a new battleground in the Top End,” Chief Minister Adam Giles said.

“TIO stadium was covered in a sea of blue and gold with more than 9500 rugby league fans turning out for this year’s clash against the Canberra Raiders and I have no doubt another huge crowd will be looking forward to watching the Territory Eels in action in 2015.

“The Northern Territory is the Eels’ home away from home and Territorians have really thrown their support behind them. It’s great to see that there are now almost 1200 Territorians who have signed up to be Eels members making the NT the largest jurisdiction for Eels members outside of NSW.

“The Darwin premiership clash will also be another great opportunity to promote our Do the NT tourism campaign and encourage Eels fans and members from around the country to make the trip North and combine a great sporting spectacle with an even greater holiday.”

The western suburbs derby will be a fantastic event for the whole family featuring some of the biggest names in the NRL including Eels stars Will Hopoate, Tim Mannah and Anthony Watmough.

“This Darwin game is a part of the Country Liberals Government’s historic $4 million four year agreement with the Eels that includes a premiership game in Darwin and trial match in Alice Springs each year as well as significant community engagement programs,” Minister for Sport and Recreation Gary Higgins said.

The Eels will play West Tigers at Anzac Oval in a trial match in Alice Springs on 13 February following on from their inaugural Central Australia clash in 2014 which drew a crowd of almost 3500 to the newly developed Anzac oval.

“The Eels relationship with the Northern Territory is a 365-day a year commitment. We look forward to working with the club again in 2015, continuing initiatives like the Eels Academy, development camps, coaching clinics and community visits,” Mr Higgins said.

“Both the Darwin and Alice Springs games are set to be blockbusters and we can’t wait to see the Territory Eels triumph again.”

Eels CEO Scott Seward; “We’re really excited to return to Darwin in 2015, especially now it’s confirmed we’ll be playing one of our rivals from Western Sydney, the Penrith Panthers. In 2014 we saw Darwin really become Eels Territory, and we look forward to seeing all the local support for the Blue and Gold once more,” he said.

Tickets for the Alice Springs game will go on sale early in the New Year. Tickets for the Darwin game, to be held on the weekend on 8-9 August 2015, will go on sale mid-year.
