Earthquake of magnitude 7.2 rattles Mexico

earthwave-300x225Southern Mexico was struck by a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.2 according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

 

Building in the nation’s capital were rocked on 18.04.14 as the tremors were felt from Guerrero, north of the resort town of Acapulco, which was the epicenter of the quake. The initial magnitude was detected at 7.5.
No injuries or damages have been reported so far, however automated population calculations show 40 million or more could feel the shaking, and 457,000 may ave felt heavy shaking and could have faced damages, reports still unconfirmed.
Traffic lights went out during the quake and caused panic among people who were on road about 60 miles west of Mexico City during the quake. People had mostly gone on holidays for Easter. 16 aftershocks were counted in the period of 38 to 40 seconds measuring 4 points in magnitude. Some people passed out in panic.
An early warning two minutes ahead in app for smartphones and Twitter of the quake helped in preparing people for the quake.
Mexico was struck by earthquake in 1985 by an 8.1 magnitude quake killing 6,000 people and destroying buildings in Mexico’s capital, the epicenter was 250 miles away. Mexico is vulnerable to quakes due to its construction on top of ancient lake beds. The pacific ring of fire has been rather active lately bringing quakes in Chile, New Guinea, and the other island nations in the South Pacific.
