Expedia Data Reveals 10% Increase in Air Travel This 4th of July

Published on : Monday, June 23, 2014

expediaAn analysis of Expedia.com data has shown that the 2014 July 4 holiday weekend will see more travelers on the whole; domestic flights during the June 30 to July 6 time period are up 10% over the same week last year. New York City tops the list of July 4 holiday travel destinations, edging Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington, DC, in the top 5.

Among the most popular destinations, Washington, DC, is seeing the largest uptick in visitors. 9% more travelers are flying into Washington this July 4th week than in 2013. San Francisco and Seattle have seen a decrease in year-over-year average ticket prices during the 4th of July holiday week, making them an attractive destination for budget-conscious travelers.

Nationwide, average ticket prices are 2% higher this July 4 holiday season than the year prior. Expedia recommends that travelers demonstrate flexibility in their travel dates if possible, because avoiding the peak travel dates remains one of the smartest ways to capture travel deals.

β€œA great day to fly to your destination is actually July 4 itself. If you fly July 4 and return July 8, that combination promises to yield the best deals,” says Sarah Gavin, Senior Director of Marketing, Expedia. β€œIt will also keep you out of the airports during the most congested time period. And always book your flight and hotel together to save up to $540 on as a bundle.”

Expedia has introduced a mobile-based coupon to drive down costs for travelers over the July 4 holiday period. The Expedia Mobile coupon offers consumers $50 dollars off of their first app purchase, based on a minimum spend of $200 for travel between June 27 and July 7.
