Düsseldorf is regarded as the traditional Japanese heartland of Europe. The city is home to a quarter of all Japanese people living in Germany.
This is celebrated with Japan Day, an annual festival of cultures that first took place in 2002. There are calligraphy presentations,
samurai displays and performances by music groups and the ladies can even try on a kimono!
Düsseldorf’s 13th Japan Day falls on 17 May 2014.
The day’s celebrations culminate in a spectacular firework display designed by pyrotechnic masters who fly in especially from Japan.
For the ultimate view of the fireworks, watch from aboard a Rhine riverboat.
