More flights took off and landed at O’Hare Sunday, Monday and Tuesday this week than at any other airport in the country.
Flights in and out of the Chicago-area airports continued to operate at high volumes yesterday, with more than 96 percent of the two-month average traffic for a Tuesday at O’Hare and 84 percent at Midway. Through 11 a.m. today, the traffic rates at the two airports were running slightly higher than yesterday, with more than 97 percent of the two-month average at O’Hare and more than 86 percent at Midway.
Technical teams and Chicago En Route Center controllers continued testing all of the equipment and systems at the facility today, including systems that manage telecommunications, flight plan information and weather data. FAA flight inspection pilots will fly through the center’s airspace tomorrow so controllers can test the aircraft tracking and communications systems with an actual aircraft. The FAA plan for transferring operations back to Chicago Center from surrounding air traffic facilities by Monday morning includes the transition of staff, airspace, air routes and equipment.
