Irish-Open-small-300x187Last week’s Irish Open was a big success as record breaking crowds descended on Cork’s Fota Island Resort as it basked in the glow of a heatwave.  With the world’s golfing media spotlight firmly focused on Cork, top golfers from across the globe arrived to compete in the event and on Sunday Finland’s Mikko Ilonen took home the title of Irish Open Champion 2014.

The Irish Open also provided a unique opportunity to showcase all that Ireland has to offer to both the golf visitor and leisure traveller as a record breaking 105,000 visitors spilled through the gates at Fota Island Resort. Hotels, restaurants, pubs and entertainment venues in Cork city and environs also benefited significantly from the influx from domestic and international visitors attending the event.

Over the four days 60 Fáilte Ireland quality assured golf clubs and four national marketing groups from around the country took centre stage in the Championship Village on the Golf Ireland Stand.

Speaking about the success of the stand, and the event, Fáilte Ireland’s Head of Golf Tourism, Tony Lenehan said –
“While we can’t take credit for the perfect weather it was a fantastic four days of golf by our Irish and European players and congratulations to Millo Illonen for providing such a thrilling finish on the day. Ireland is a superb golfing destination and is well-equipped for golfing visitors. This really is a golfer’s paradise, with more than 400 courses, and a staggering 30% of the world’s best links courses.

We were also delighted to have so many quality assured golf clubs represented at the tented village over the Open. This event provided a wonderful advertising opportunity to showcase the ingredients we are most famous for – our wonderful golf courses and our warm friendly hospitality, our people and there is nothing more powerful than the first hand sales pitch that so many visitors received at the event.

In order that the Irish Open received as much international media coverage as possible, Fáilte Ireland, in conjunction with Tourism Ireland organised for a group of key international journalists to attend the Irish Open as well as a networking event for over 100 accredited sports media in order to outline the value of Irish tourism and its contribution to the economy.”
