Dublin-Convention-small-300x187The nation’s capital received a major boost this week as the newly released ICCA (International Congresses and Conventions Association) rankings show Dublin rising nine places in the world ranking to 13th globally for hosting conferences and conventions.

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring T.D. welcomed the new rating and explained how a city’s ranking in the ICCA statistics reflects its position in the international conference market –

“The ICCA ranking for Dublin for 2013 is a wonderful achievement in this highly competitive market-place.  It is testament to the quality contribution and enduring commitment from the Irish industry amidst the tough economic and operating environment of recent years.  Without doubt the excellent product and high degree of professionalism within the Irish business tourism sector is paying dividends.”

Dublin, according to the ICCA rankings, now beats other very high profile cities such as Rome, Brussels, Copenhagen, Budapest and Stockholm when it comes to hosting major business events.  It is strong evidence that Dublin is a very popular destination for international conferences and is successfully punching above its weight on the international stage.

Increasing the number of meetings in Ireland requires the expertise of a wide variety of suppliers from Convention Bureaux to Professional Conference Organisers, Destination Management Companies to venue, hotels and academic institutions working together.

Keith McCormack, Fáilte Ireland’s Head of Business Tourism emphasised –

“Strong ICCA results rely on a wide array of stakeholders providing a top class, flexible and dynamic service throughout the year.  The industry should be very proud of this significant achievement and Fáilte Ireland will continue to work closely with those involved throughout 2014 to ensure we sustain and improve on this wonderful result.”

The results were released as business tourism trade representing the capital departed for London at Failte Ireland’s “Meet Dublin in London” event where they will meet with top UK meetings and events buyers.  The annual high profile showcase and workshop event will be targeting significant new UK business and will once again involve an innovative on-board networking session on the Silver Sturgeon boat as it cruises along the River Thames.

Anticipating new business at the Meet Dublin in London event, Keith McCormack emphasised –

“Having all the right Dublin players and prospective UK customers in the one room – and on the one boat – is a valuable opportunity to influence key UK decision makers as they plan their business events for the remainder of 2014 and beyond.

“As an annual event, the ‘Meet Dublin in London’ workshop has become a firm fixture on the business tourism calendar and one that can’t be missed for both Irish trade and UK buyers alike.”

The workshop allows UK meetings and events buyers to connect with Dublin hoteliers, venues and conference organisers.  This year 40 Irish trade members will be showcasing the world class facilities that Dublin can offer business visitors to an elite group of over 150 UK decision makers.

Already in 2014, Failte Ireland has recorded almost 60,000 international delegates coming to Ireland worth an estimated value of €80 million.
