At least 10 people were killed and another 16 injured in Peru after a passenger bus plummeted off a steep cliff in the country’s central Andean region, the Highway Police (Polcar) said Monday.
The accident occurred at 2:30 am local time (0730 GMT), when the bus slid out of its lane and turned over near the town of Suchiman, as it was traveling along the highway linking the port city of Chimbote in the northwest Ancash region to Huacrachuco in the neighboring central region of Huanuco.
Due to the site’s remoteness and lack of telephone service, officials didn’t find out about the crash until two hours later.
Police and fire-fighting rescue teams were able to reach the 16 injured passengers, who were taken to Ancash area hospitals. The fatal victims were taken to the local morgue.
Preliminary reports indicate speeding and poor visibility at night-time may have caused the crash.
