Fenimore Art Museum Announces 2013 Exhibition Schedule

Published on : Wednesday, February 6, 2013

Building on the strengths of its collections of American fine art, folk art, and American Indian art, the Fenimore Art Museum announced its exhibition schedule for 2013.  The museum will reopen for the season on Saturday, March 30.  Featured exhibitions this year include:
The Hudson River School: Nature and the American Vision

June 29-September 29

This major exhibition highlights 19th century Hudson River School artists and explores landscape painting as a powerful narrative device that embodied ideas about nature and culture in a rapidly changing country. Works by Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Cole, Frederic Church, and others illuminate this self-consciously American landscape vision.

Iconic works are featured, including Thomas Cole’s five-part series, The Course of Empire, and other masterworks by Cole, John F. Kensett, Albert Bierstadt, Jasper F. Cropsey, and Asher B. Durand.  This exhibition has been organized by the New-York Historical Society.

The Wyeths: A Family Legacy

May 25-September 2

View the works of Howard Pyle and the Wyeth family – N.C., Andrew, and James, as well as Carolyn, Henriette and her husband Peter Hurd. The Wyeths have influenced each other’s techniques, media and subject matter and have taught each other back and forth across the generations. Inspired by teacher and illustrator Howard Pyle and informed by deep attachment to home and place, the works stand together to create a unique vision of American life.

Guest curated by Megan Holloway Fort, Ph.D., this will be one of the few public exhibits to display the work of the family together and highlight these connections.
