FestivalsNT creates $1.7 million new position to see proper celebration of Territory Day

Northern-Territory-300x86 (2)The Territory Government is creating a new position to drive its $1.7 million FestivalsNT program including celebrations for Territory Day.

“FestivalsNT is a comprehensive program of events that builds on existing activities, while incorporating new sporting, business and cultural elements, many with an Asian flavour,” Chief Minister Adam Giles said.

“Territory Day is a key part of the FestivalsNT calendar and we’d like people to use today to think about how this celebration can be enhanced next year.

“Cracker night will always be part of this celebration but there’s an opportunity to make it much more by developing a wider program of events that showcase our Territory spirit.
“A new Director will be engaged to develop a strategy that encompasses the activities in the FestivalsNT calendar, as well as create a new signature event for 2015 that offers a greater focus around Territory Day.

“We will start advertising for someone to fill this position this weekend and I look forward to working with the successful candidate on building this exciting project.”
The Director will liaise with stakeholders and develop events that will fall under the FestivalsNT banner.

They will be responsible to a new Steering Committee that is made up of at least six other people who will be appointed based in their experience and knowledge of the Territory.
Other members of the Steering Committee will include the General Managers of both the Darwin and Alice Springs Convention Centres, as well as a regional tourism, sports/culture and Major Events representative. There will also be an independent Chairperson.

“FestivalsNT will cement the Territory as the gateway between Asia and Australia. It will establish Northern Australia as a meeting place for conducting business, as well as a hub for arts, culture and tourism, and a top class sporting destination,” Mr Giles said.
“This is a smart strategic move that will mean a wider range of high quality festival entertainment for Territorians and boost the economy by strengthening our business and cultural ties with Asia.

“This year’s festival season will be bigger and better with a range of new arts activities. This includes five additional acts for the Darwin Festival as part of a $1.3 million package of support from the Territory Government.
“I urge all Territorians to get involved in this year-round celebration of who we are and what’s unique to the NT.”
