A stray dog rescued after having her head stuck in a plastic bottle for more than a week on an Eastern Mediterranean island is to jet into South Yorkshire before travelling to its new home in Scotland.
Cosmopolitan canine Freya is a German wire-haired pointer who will be flying from Paphos Airport in Cyprus to Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield before being welcomed into her new home by owner Sarah Jane Davies in Edinburgh.
The plucky pooch was spotted with the plastic bottle trapped on her head in Lemessos, Cyprus, towards the end of last year and rescue teams spent days trying to capture and rescue her.
Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield has a dedicated Animal Reception Centre and, in conjunction with Anglo World Cargo, has been carrying out importation and exportation of domestic pets under the DEFRA / Animal Health Pets Travel Scheme since January 2013.
AIA PETS – the in-house pet agent for Thomson Cargo – has made the booking to ensure Freya can make her trip to the UK and land at Doncaster Sheffield Airport on March 12.
Steve Gill, managing director of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: “Ours is one of only six UK airports to have the DEFRA allowance and last year we imported or exported more than 220 cats and dogs – and one parrot!”
She will be looked after by Anglo World Cargo before making her onward journey to Edinburgh, delivered to her new home the same evening by the team’s dedicated pet travel service.
Gary Winterman, managing director of Anglo World Cargo, said: “We’re really looking forward to working closely with AIA and to welcoming brave Freya to Doncaster.
