The move would be risky for tourism and France’s tentative economy, but French foreign minister Laurent Fabius has attacked plans to increase hotel taxes more than five times paid by tourists.
Lawmakers from Fabius’ Socialist Party initated two increases in the tourist tax, passed last week in parliament’s lower chamber.
If confirmed by the Senate, they could force holidaymakers to expend up to eight euros (£6) per night in hotel taxes, rather than 1.50 euros (£1.20) presently, with the price rising with the hotel category. Another rise adds two more euros for Paris region hotels to pay for transport improvements.
The increases are “dangerous and totally contrary to the promotion of tourism, a priority for jobs”. He joins tourist professionals in criticizing the moves, said Mr. Fabius
