“Get into Airports” programme helps unemployed youngsters find work – London Luton Airport

Published on : Thursday, February 7, 2013

Nine unemployed young people from Luton have successfully secured jobs at London Luton Airport after completing a Prince’s Trust programme to help get them into work.

The local youngsters will kick off their careers at the Airport with organisations including Hotel Chocolat, Starbucks, SSP, DHL Aviation, OCS and Dixons Travel.

This comes at a time when more than one in ten (16%) of Luton’s young people are struggling to find work.

Father of three Terry Clark, 24, was offered employment with DHL following his placement with the company, dealing with cargo that comes into the Airport. He had been unemployed for six months before starting the Get into Airports programme with London Luton Airport.

Terry said: “Moving from London to Luton in an effort to find work and provide for my family was one of the toughest decisions of my life. When I heard about The Prince’s Trust Get into Airports programme at London Luton Airport, I applied for a place straight away – it seemed like a fantastic opportunity to get some solid work experience under my belt. I found my work placement with the DHL Aviation Team hugely rewarding – even with all the night shifts! To then find out I had been offered a job with them was one of the best moments of my life. I now feel like a good role model for my children and am looking forward to the future.”

After being made redundant from her job, Masooma Kazmi, 24, was unemployed for over a year before joining Get into Airports.

She now works in Starbucks as a customer service assistant.

Masooma said:  “When I still couldn’t find a job after a year of looking, I began to think that things would never change. I heard about The Prince’s Trust Get into Airports programme during a visit to the Job Centre.  I wasn’t sure if it could help me but I felt I had nothing to lose. Thank to the programme, my confidence levels rocketed and I was thrilled to discover that I had secured a new job with Starbucks. I would encourage other unemployed young people out there to check it out.”

This is the second Get into Airports programme that The Prince’s Trust has delivered with London Luton Airport. The programme gives unemployed young people aged 16-25 hands-on experience in the aviation industry, as well as developing their confidence and motivation.

Three in four of the young people supported by The Prince’s Trust move into work, education or training.  Following the course young people will receive up to six months’ support from The Prince’s Trust to help them further their careers.

John O’Reilly regional director for The Prince’s Trust in Central England said: “We are delighted that these young people are looking forward to a brighter future.  London Luton Airport is the first airport to work with The Prince’s Trust in this way and the results have been fantastic. We hope that many more airports will look to come on board with us in the future.”
