The German National Tourist Office (GNTO) has created a new additional category for its annual ‘Germany Travel Writers Award’ for ‘travel editorial online’ – travel articles that appear on specialist editorial online travel sites only. The Germany Travel Writers Award is open to all travel journalists in the UK and Northern Ireland and journalists are invited to submit their entries by Wednesday 1st October 2014.
The number of overnight stays from the UK and Northern Ireland to Germany has
consistently been showing a steady increase and the latest statistics show a 4.1%
increase for the period January – April 2014, compared to a similar period for 2013. The
new ‘travel editorial online’ category reflects the diversity in travel writing media and the
increased interest in holidays in Germany, from city breaks, to ‘BarrierFree’ travel, to
Germany’s strong sustainable travel opportunities, or exploring less well-known regions.
Interest in the Irish Republic shows a similar, upward trend to the extent that the GNTO is launching a new, separate “GNTO Irish Travel Writers Award” exclusively for the Republic of Ireland and that first awards ceremony will take place in Dublin on Thursday, 16th October, in conjunction with Visit Berlin and the German Embassy.
Klaus Lohmann, Director, GNTO UK and Ireland said: “interest in Germany is increasing all the time and we’ve noticed that visitors are becoming more curious about the less well-known areas of Germany – the parts of Germany where the locals go. Visitors want different ideas for their holidays and to find something new, but with the advantage of the easy accessiblity and value for money that Germany offers”.
