Grand-JerseyThe five-star Grand Jersey raised nearly £10,000 for charity in 2013 and it is hoped that an even higher target will be reached this year.

The hotel hosted a number of fundraising initiatives and events throughout 2013 to help support a variety of local charities, including MacMillan Cancer Support, Jersey Heritage, Brighter Futures, Jersey Hospice, Le Geyt Adult Day Care Services and the annual Soup Kitchen for Shelter event.

In 2010, Grand Jersey launched the ‘£1 on bills’ donation scheme, which gives guests staying at the hotel the option of adding £1 to their final bill to be donated to local charities. The initiative has previously raised over £12,000 for Durrell Wildlife Conservation, and generated £6,057 for Jersey Heritage in 2013.

Grand Jersey managing director, Eamonn Elliott, said: ‘It has been another successful year for the £1 on bills scheme, which, thanks to the generosity of our guests has provided essential resources for the preservation of Jersey’s unique and wonderful heritage. The feedback we have received about the initiative has been overwhelmingly positive and we hope to raise further funds for local charities through the scheme in 2014.’

The hotel also provided support to other causes in 2013, most notably through their work for local children’s charity, Brighter Futures. In February, executive head chef, Richard Allen, gave families from the Brighter Futures Inbetweenies club a cookery demonstration and advised parents about nutrition and affordable meals at home. The hotel also put on a summer event in the park, providing healthy picnics and fun activities for the children to celebrate Love Parks Week. In October, to celebrate National Customer Service Week, hotel manager, Mr Elliott, did a day’s work experience at Hawksford as a mailman, while Hawksford’s chief executive, Peter Murley, joined the Grand Jersey concierge team for the day, to raise money for the charity.

In addition to financial aid, Grand Jersey hosted and sponsored numerous charity dinners, drinks receptions and events at the hotel, including the Jersey Hospice Lottery draw, the MacMillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning and the amateur production of ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’, which raised nearly £1,000 for the Le Geyt Adult Day Care Services.

The hotel also held a carol service in December, providing mince pies, mulled wine and a gift-wrapping service in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support Jersey. Recovering cancer patients and their families were also invited to a seminar at the hotel, during which health experts provided wellness tips and the use of a pop-up spa. Additionally, Victoria’s restaurant sponsored the annual Soup Kitchen for Shelter event, with the head chef donating a special soup to raise funds for homeless people in the island.

‘I am incredibly proud of the consistent levels of commitment, enthusiasm and compassion shown by our dedicated staff throughout 2013. We are lucky to have such a great range of facilities available to support so many local and worthy charities and I hope our efforts can be even better in 2014,’ said Mr Elliott.
