ttfToday’s planning approval for the CBD and South East Light Rail project means that construction of this transformative project is now within sight, according to peak national industry group, Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF).

TTF Deputy Chief Executive Trent Zimmerman said that light rail will deliver a more reliable and comfortable way for thousands of residents and visitors to move around the CBD and south-east suburbs while removing over 200 buses from the CBD during the peak and allowing George Street to become a pedestrian-friendly boulevard.

“The Department of Planning and Environment has found that the project is a once in a generation opportunity to transform Sydney’s CBD and improve public transport to the city and the south east,” Mr Zimmerman said.

“The planning assessment report is also a reminder that this project will be complex and cause disruption for residents, businesses and workers during construction.

“It is however important that we don’t lose sight of the benefits it will deliver our city.
“The department has given approval subject to a number of conditions which will help mitigate the impact of construction, improve the final design of the project and ensure detailed consultation with the community.

“We particularly welcome conditions that will require the government to remove plans for overhead wiring in the Circular Quay precinct if this is technically feasible. Circular Quay is the international gateway to the CBD and its visual amenity must be protected.

“Light rail will allow George Street to be transformed into a main street that will be a source of pride to all Sydneysiders and boost our standing as a global city. Light rail to the Moore Park sport and entertainment complex, UNSW, Royal Randwick and the Prince of Wales medical precinct will make it easier to get to these precincts and reduce traffic congestion during major events.

“The construction of the light rail project will help ensure we have a world-class public transport system that is capable of supporting the growth of our city.”
