Gushing water from Beas drowns 24 students

Beas-300x168Twenty four students from the VNR Engineering College Hyderabad, who had gone to visit Manali are feared dead in the river Beas near Thalot village in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district. Large quantity of water was released from the Larji reservoir when the students touring the area were taking pictures in the banks of the river at Thalot. Hundreds of cusecs of water discharged from Larji Hydro Power Project’s reservoir on 08.06.14 Sunday 7pm caught the young tourists completely unaware and they were washed away in the disastrous deluge.

 
The students, 18 boys and six girls heading to Mandi on their way to Manali when they decided to stop the bus to get down and walk to the river bank to take pictures with the Beas in the background. Quite unknowingly huge gush of water swept them away in seconds without an alarm or a warning siren from the Larji power project management to let people know that the reservoir would be released.
 

Rescue operations were started with professional rafters and divers to search for any survivors. Local people and the police also got into the act to search for the missing, but it was dark and became impossible to locate anything. Massive current must have carried them to another reservoir 20km downstream at Pandoh said sources, more rescue workers have been sent to Mandi.
 

Two bodies were recovered on 09.06.14 Monday morning from the Mandi district; search for the rest of the twenty two is still on. Rescue workers are trying their best to recover the bodies.
