Hartsfield-Jackson-Airport-300x97Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Lufthansa Cargo celebrated the impending arrival of Lufthansa Cargo’s very first Boeing 777 on Tuesday with a reception and remarks from company, city and airport officials. The new cargo freighter increases cargo capacity by 20-percent. The arrival of the $270 million cargo freighter represents Lufthansa’s latest efforts to modernize and expand its cargo fleet.

Lufthansa Cargo’s first Boeing 777 departed on Tuesday evening from Frankfurt, Germany and briefly stopped in New York City before arriving in Atlanta at 1 a.m. on Wednesday. The Boeing 777 will offer direct service from Frankfurt to Atlanta.

“At Hartsfield-Jackson we are committed to growing passenger and air cargo service in Atlanta,” said Hartsfield-Jackson general manager Louis Miller. “As a result of forward-thinking investments like Lufthansa Cargo’s 777 service, Hartsfield-Jackson is on a clear trajectory towards becoming one of the world’s premier logical hubs.”

“The Boeing 777 is not only the most powerful, efficient and ecological freighter in the world but also a highly visible symbol of our ‘Lufthansa Cargo 2020’ future program,” said Lufthansa Cargo Chief Executive Officer Karl Ulrich Garnadt. “The addition of the twin-engine Boeing freighter to the fleet was an important milestone on our path to shaping a company for the next generation.”

Due to the twin-engine, the aircraft is able to remain in the air for ten and a half hours, enabling it to fly non-stop for more than 5,500 miles. Lufthansa Cargo’s second Boeing 777 will be delivered at the end of November. Two further jets will follow in the first half of 2014 and a fifth in 2015.
