A ‘tomahawk steak’ inspired by the smash television phenomenon Game of Thrones, has been created by the ingenious chefs at the Hastings Hotel Group and is pulling together the opportunities provided by both the Year of Food and Drink and screen tourism.
On the menu during August’s Love NI Meat month, the Westeros Tomahawk steak joins the Game of Thrones Afternoon Tea and the Game of Thrones doors as part of the Group’s promotions based on the programme’s popularity. HBO’s award-winning television series Game of Thrones was filmed in the surrounding areas of Hastings Hotels’ Ballygally Castle with cast and crew from the series frequently found residing at the castle. The Westeros steak and one of the ten ‘Door of Thrones’ on view across the north, can also be found at the Percy French restaurant at the Slieve Donard Hotel in Newcastle.
As part of the Game of Thrones culinary experience enthusiasts can enjoy the Westeros Tomahawk Steak served with a Valyrian steel style carving knife. The 20oz salt aged steak has been specially prepared for the Group by local butchers Carnbrooke Meats in Dromore and is served on a wooden platter with the Valyrian knife. In the award winning TV series, Valyrian steel is one of the few things that can kill White Walkers alongside dragonglass.
Managing Director of Hastings Hotels, Howard Hastings, said, “The Percy French and Ballygally Castle are becoming increasingly popular with fans from the series who want to see the doors and visit the film locations. The doors look fabulous and have been carved from the wood of two fallen 200-year-old birches that once stood at the Dark Hedges, another famous Game of Thrones landmark that represents Kingsroad in the series.
“But we didn’t want to stop there and now our team of talented chefs have created a unique Westeros Tomahawk Steak dish which is exclusively available at the Percy French and Ballygally Castle. The incredible steak is served with our special Causeway chips, Portobello mushrooms, beef tomatoes, rocket garnish and a choice of sauce. A Tomahawk makes an ideal sharing steak for a special occasion or romantic meal, as it can easily feed two and at £60 for two people, it is a very hearty and unique dinner choice.”
The Westeros Tomahawk Steak joins the Game of Thrones inspired Afternoon Tea at Ballygally. The delicious treats, inspired by the fantasy lands of Winterfell, Iron Islands, Kings Landing or Stormlands, includes Lannister egg Rolls, Baratheon Bread, Little Finger Chicken Caesar wraps, Jon Snow Cakes and Dothraki Trifle with mini Dragon’s eggs.
One each of the 10 intricately carved doors, illustrating moments inspired by this season, are also on view at each hotel.
The doors which were unveiled each week as season six unfolded, reference key scenes and events from the latest episode and incorporate some of the iconic symbols of the show. The doors are carved from the trees blown down in Storm Gertrude at the Dark Hedges in Co Antrim – which serves as the backdrop for the Kingsroad, perhaps the most iconic Game of Thrones® location in Northern Ireland. The wood from the fallen trees was salvaged and carved into legacy pieces marking each episode, demonstrating the connection between the show and Northern Ireland.
