Elephanta cavesThere is good news from International and domestic tourists who often have to forgo their expectations of visiting the Elephanta caves, a network of sculpted caves located on Elephanta Island, or Gharapuri in Mumbai Harbour, 10 kilometers to the east of the city of Mumbai owing to its paucity. Two private companies have applied for helicopter services from the city to the mid-sea. If things fall in place then the service will be available in a couple of months.

At present tourists have to rely on boats that ferry them to the island 9 nautical miles in a two hours ride back and forth. The total time spent is about four to five hours.  The choppers will definitely cut the time and help tourists visit this 7th century cave temple of Lord Shiva at much lesser time.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has confirmed receiving the proposals from two parties. He assured that if the permission is in place the services will start as per rules.

The rates are a bit high, feels the Managing Director of Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation, Paraag Jaiin Nainuttia. The companies have been asked to submit revised price statements.

There are proposals to allot a piece of land behind the caves which will be used as helipad, MTDC has written to Raigad district administration authorities asking for a sanction. However, one can only hope that the structure will not be damaged with the vibration caused by the copters.

The helicopter service will definitely increase the inflow of tourists to the caves.
