Italian restaurant gives a shot of the new to Uma by COMO, Ubud

comoUma by COMO, Ubud, the Balinese adventure retreat from COMO Hotels and Resorts, has expanded its offering with ‘Uma Cucina’, a new Italian-inspired restaurant and lounge bar. Under the creative hands of designer Maximilian Jencquel, seventeen new rooms have also been added to this retreat.

Located on the Jalan Raya Sanggingan road, Uma Cucina is an informal space referencing the restaurants of Italy, where locals and hotel guests can gather for easygoing lunches, afternoon tea, early evening bites, aperitifs and evening meals on the open-air terrace. The menu, presided over by chef Nicolas Lazzaroni, is strong on fresh, locally-sourced produce and the flavours of the Italian kitchen. House specialities include handmade pastas, woodfired pizzas and breads, as well as classic Italian gelatos and granitas. Sample dishes include grilled sardines with sweet and hot peppers, garganelli with fresh yellow fin tuna and rosemary ragu, and wood roasted suckling pig with fennel confit.

Also on the menu at Uma Cucina is a bold, contemporary cocktail list that weaves together classic Italian influences and local Balinese flavours in new and exciting combinations. Highlights created by bar staff, trained by COMO’s well-regarded mixologists at the Met Bar in London, include the ‘Uma Cucina Negroni’, and the ‘Pandanus Fizz’, combining pandan extracts and coconut cream, Tanqueray gin, fresh lemon and egg white. A selection of non-alcoholic cocktails and smoothies are also available. Uma Cucina complements Uma Ubud’s existing ‘Kemiri’ restaurant and ‘Uma Pool Bar’ – both established destinations among guests and locals for relaxed Balinese and international cuisine.

Also new at Uma Ubud are seventeen new rooms, including four Ubud Rooms (from US$270 in the low season), four Pool Suites with private plunge pools and sundecks (from US$320 in the low season), and five headline Pool Villas, each with their own swimming pool (from US$470 in the low season), take the total accommodation to 46 rooms at this intimate retreat located on the edge of the artists’ town of Ubud. The new accommodation created by designer Maximilian Jencquel maintains Uma Ubud’s contemporary Balinese feel, with light-filled spaces opening on to lush tropical gardens. The buildings fit naturally into the landscape, which is dappled with rice paddies, through the use of indigenous materials like local woods and alang-alang thatched roofs.

As before, the Uma experience is rounded out by the hotel’s other luxury amenities, including a COMO Shambhala Retreat for massages and facials, daily yoga, specialist guiding, treks and tours and tailor-made cultural programmes .

Uma Cucina is open daily for lunch from 12 noon to 3.30pm and for dinner from 6.30pm to 10.30pm.
