Japan: Okinawa Day 2014

Japanese-National-Tourism-Organisation-logoAn Okinawa Day will be held at Spitalfields in London on Saturday, 21st June 2014. The event has become an annual celebration of the food, culture and traditions of Japan’s subtropical Okinawa islands.

 

The programme includes:
* Ryukyu music –Okinawan folk music are generally accompanied by one (or more) sanshin, (literally “three strings”), an Okinawan musical instrument often likened to a banjo. Ryukyu folk songs are happy, uplifting tunes, including lively shouts and whistling.
* Eisa dance and workshops – eisa is an Okinawan folk dance originally performed by young people to entertain the spirits of ancestors, who are believed to visit their families in the Obon season.The unique rhythms and movements of eisa are accompanied by the beating of drums and a beautiful, lively dance that involves the whole body.
* Karate performances – anyone who is familiar with the 1980s Karate Kids films will remember Mr. Miyagi and know that Okinawa was the birthplace of karate. Throughout the Okinawa islands there are many karate dojo schools that people from around the world visit to learn about this ancient martial art.
* Food stalls including Okinawa Buku Buku Cha (Okinawa Tea ceremony) and awamori (Okinawan liquor).
* Arts and Crafts Stalls from Okinawa.
* Tourism information for Okinawa – ask any questions you have about travel to Okinawa and pick up useful travel and cultural guides and maps to Okinawa.
