Jilin, China — where you find the perfect rime

Published on : Thursday, January 15, 2015

Jilin, China rimeWinters in China are difficult, but if you have a penchant for braving the cold and are a true nature lover then Jilin in China may just be the right place for you. Wear a few layers of warm clothing and head on to brace nature’s majesty all draped in its white garbs of ice. Jilin is 200km to the southwest of China and the icy spectacle is a treat for the eye.

The place offers dazzling sceneries from late November to early March when ice crystals settle on trees giving the appearance of soft dust of icing on a perfectly decorated cake.

The fog below 0 degree remains in its liquid form until it rubs on something solid like tree leaves or the branches and freezes instantly into tiny ice granules growing into feathery white form known as rime.

The geography of Jilin is just right for the formation of rime and the hydro power dam helps in the formation of the freezing fog as the city’s river keeps flowing. The temperature sometimes dips to a low of -32 degrees. It is located at latitude of 44 degrees north and some 350km inland.

Various competitions are held during this time in Jilin.  The Jilin International Rime Ice and Snow Festival, which includes ice-skating and skiing competitions, photography exhibitions and even rime-inspired poetry competitions are a great attraction. However the best time to visit Jilin for rime sightings is during January and stays for only 9.4 days.

You can find out the best time for rime sightings from Jilin’s local daily so keep an eye to get news on the rime formation and plan a visit accordingly.
