Local children aged 5 – 11 are invited to sign up for a special Kite-making workshop taking place between 1pm – 5pm in the Square as part of a joint initiative between Derry City Council and STEM Aware, with support from the Peace III Programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by the North West Peace III Cluster.

This event takes place on International Peace Day and adds a touch of family fun to a citywide weekend programme of cultural celebrations taking place from September 19-21, including MTV Crashes Ebrington and Culture Night on Friday evening, the CultureTech Festival, which runs throughout the weekend, the Club MTV DJ night on Saturday, and the Music Trail on Sunday night.

Director of Legacy with Derry City Council, Oonagh McGillion, said the Kite Building Day brought some alternative outdoor fun to the weekend. ‘I am delighted that we are hosting this event in our scenic shared space in Ebrington, it’s a great opportunity for families to get creative and enjoy a unique family day out.

‘STEM Aware do amazing work in the community introducing creative and innovative approaches to educating young people, and it’s fantastic that Derry City Council has the opportunity to support STEM in promoting learning. This is a fun way to both introduce new skills and get creative with the kids.’

Children and Young Persons Officer with Derry City Council, Gemma Scarlett, said: “It’s envisaged that the concept of Kite Building will enable children and young people from Derry and Strabane to participate in an educating and rewarding workshop through crafts. “Children will be given the opportunity to create, and be creative through a project that will ‘embrace fulfilment and fun.”

STEM Aware co-ordinates a number of workshops and activities in community groups and in nursery, primary and secondary schools. The group promotes Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths in nursery, primary and secondary schools, and introduces the Arts to events such as Summer STEAM Summer Camps and Saturday STEAM.
