New flashing lights and alarm bells have been installed at the Lake Brunner Road level crossing near Jacksons on the West Coast. The crossing had previously been protected by railway crossing and stop signs.
This is the second set of flashing lights and alarm bells installed on the West Coast this month after the upgrade of the level crossing at SH67, near Granity, was completed earlier in June.
Upgrades on level crossings are based on an assessment that takes into account factors including location, road and rail traffic numbers, the number of railway tracks to be crossed, and whether views of approaching trains are obstructed.
KiwiRail recognised that road and rail traffic levels at the crossing were significant, and new flashing lights and bells were installed to replace the crossings signs.
Even with the addition of flashing lights and bells, KiwiRail advises caution when approaching level crossings. We urge all drivers to obey the warning signs, and look in both directions for trains. Listen, be aware, pay careful attention to your surroundings, and always ensure there’s space on the other side of the crossing for your vehicle.
It can take a train up to a kilometre to come to a stop. Motorists should always be prepared to stop when approaching a level crossing and look in both directions to check the way is clear of trains.
The Lake Brunner Road level crossing is the seventh level crossing protection upgrade that has been completed over the 2013/14 financial year and is the 28th West Coast crossing to have flashing lights and bells installed.
In the financial year ending June 2015, it is hoped that a further seven level crossings will have upgraded alarm systems installed.
