Kiwi Rail – Aratere has departed Singapore

KiwiRailLogo-300x63The Interislander ferry Aratere left Singapore overnight and is now en route for New Zealand.

The Aratere will sail to Wellington, via Gladstone, Australia, where she will stop to refuel. Her likely arrival date will be weather dependent. Kiwirail will be in a position to give an updated time of arrival as the ship nears New Zealand.

On arrival she will undergo final commissioning tests, and will initially be on a reduced sailing, freight-only schedule.

She has been in dry dock in Singapore following a propeller shaft failure in November. Apart from the repair work needed as a result of that event, the vessel has also undergone her full two-year maintenance programme while she was laid up.

The work undertaken has included the manufacture and installation, replacement or overhaul of a wide range of equipment including propellers, propeller shafts, steering gear, rudders, gearboxes, motors, bearings and stabilisers.

Over the past two weeks she has also undergone a series of rigorous sea trials off the Singapore coast. These identified some commissioning issues with the overhauled steering gear, all of which have been successfully rectified by the manufacturer’s service representative.
