Earth Hour 2015 took place on March 28 at 8:30p.m. local time. The annual global environmental awareness event was created and instituted by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 2007 to emphasize the threat of global warming and the need to reduce carbon emissions.

Le Méridien Al Aqah Beach Resort participated by switchingoff lights, and organized a number of innovative projects for guests. A full day event was planned atthe resort including activities such as full beach cleaning, trash collection at Sapore Lawn, tree planting and all day activities for children at Penguin Club. The exterior signage lighting and non-essential interior lighting was either switched off or dimmed Battery operated candles and wax candles were used to illuminate appropriate public areas such as restaurants and bars. As a part of the atmospheric gathering at Layali Lawns in the evening, solar power was used to educate and entertain guests through inspiring videos, followed by a special Earth Hour dance show from the animation team. The hotel guests and participants enjoyed a long list of drinks and cocktails in combination with entertainment, on this magical evening at Le Méridien Al Aqah Beach Resort.

“It’s a privilege for us to support such a powerful movement with such a simple gesture,” said Patrick Antaki, Complex General Manager Le Méridien Al Aqah Beach Resort.  “Earth Hour also reflects a philosophy we try to practice year-round:  The small steps each of us takes make a big difference together.”

Last year, nearly half of Starwood’s 1,200 properties participated. In addition to energy conservation, many properties hosted Earth Hour inspired activities that engaged associates and guests alike to promote and celebrate environmental awareness. Some projects and programming included themed menus designed to highlight local and organic foods and Earth Hour inspired cocktails; special performances, tailored concerts, and displays of traditional entertainment; and distinctive campaigns devised to support individual community initiatives and conservation efforts.
