In what is a first in the UK, Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park Authority has transformed Glasgow Airport’s international arrivals walkway into an interactive loch-side woodland experience of Scotland’s first National Park.
Passengers flying into Glasgow Airport will now step from their international flight straight into a dappled woodland scene, complete with indigenous wildlife, the scent of the forest and the sound of bird song.
Travellers will be led along part of Scotland’s best known long distance trail, the West Highland Way, and can even rest for a moment on wooden benches to take in the views of the loch, islands and mountains between the trees.
The new 3D sensory experience is expected to welcome hundreds of thousands of foreign visitors arriving into Glasgow this summer alone and encourage them to explore the beautiful countryside within easy reach of Glasgow.
Fiona Logan, chief executive of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park said:
“We wanted to create a memorable sense of arrival for people when they step off the plane by giving them a taste of the National Park, which is only 30 minutes drive away.
“What we have produced here is the perfect welcome to Scotland; helping people to unwind while they drink in the sights and sounds of the National Park, and we hope they’ll be inspired to come and experience it for real. The Park is for everyone to explore. It’s closer than you think!”
The walkway depicts various scenes from around the National Park including a woodland and loch shot from the east side of Loch Lomond between Balmaha and Rowardennan.
There are also images capturing some of the creatures that call the area home including the rare Red Squirrel and the Black Grouse.
Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport said: “For many, Glasgow Airport is their first impression of Scotland and it is important to us we provide a warm and memorable welcome to the millions of people who travel through our doors every year.
The interactive woodland is a fun and engaging way of showcasing one of our most beautiful natural environments and I am sure many will be surprised to find themselves in a forest when they step off their flight.
Not only will it create a real sense of place, it will hopefully inspire people to visit Loch Lomond & The Trossachs during their visit to Scotland.”
Funded by Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park and supported by Glasgow Airport, and was driven forward by the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park Destination Group.
The aim was to give UK and foreign visitors, as well as Scots returning home, an amazing and memorable welcome at the international arrivals of Glasgow Airport.
The combined beauty of the forest as it opens to a stunning picture view of Loch Lomond together with woodland smells, against a backdrop of summer birdsong brings a smile to even the weary and jet-lagged.
By offering a taste of the National Park, the ambition of the business-led Destination Group is to immerse passengers in an unique experiential, all senses arrival.
